Better Swing Mechanics Made By Improved Mobility and Stability

Gary Cervone
Golf and Sports Medicine Specialist

Dr. Gary Cervone at Cumberland Chiropractic and Sports Medicine in Lebanon TN specializes in treating golfers and golf-related injuries. In recent years, more and more research is being done on the mechanics of a golf swing and how to identify problems in a golf swing that can lead to decreased performance on the course, and the potential for injuries while playing golf!

Dr. Cervone is certified by the Titleist Performance Institute to evaluate a player’s golf swing, as well as perform a detailed biomechanical screen that can pinpoint dysfunctions in movement or stability.  These physical limitations in a player’s body can adversely affect the golf swing and potentially lead to injury. Coupled with gold-standard rehabilitative techniques like myofascial release, Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization, and McKenzie Method of Diagnosis and Therapy, Dr. Cervone is able to identify and treat movement and stability problems to get you out of pain and back on the course, and improve your golf game!
What Is The Titleist Performance Institute?

The Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) is the world's leading educational organization dedicated to the study of how the human body functions in relation to the golf swing.  TPI is focused on a holistic approach and innovative technologies to help golfers improve their performance. Utilizing advanced equipment fitting methods, detailed swing analysis, and science-based player conditioning, TPI helps golfers improve their game, as well as identify potentially harmful characteristics of their game that is currently causing or could potentially cause injury by establishing each player’s Body-Swing Connection™.

How can a TPI evaluation help a golf swing?

A problem in a player’s Body-Swing Connection can lead to problems like:

  • Hooks and Slice
  • Topping The Ball and Blocks
  • Too Much or Too Little Loft
  • Too Much or Too Little Ball Spin
  • Loss of Balance During the Golf Swing
  • Inability To Control Distance On a Swing
OR common golf injuries like:
  • Lower Back Pain
  • Shoulder, Elbow, or Wrist Pain (ie. Golfer’s Elbow)
  • Hip, Knee, or Ankle Pain
  • Neck Pain
  • Spinal Disc Injuries
  • Early Onset Arthritis

The "Over The Top" swing characteristic can cause a slice or pull of the ball but can be caused by decreased pelvic mobility or poor core stability.

What Does A TPI Evaluation Look Like?

Dr. Cervone is trained to evaluate a player’s physical abilities and golf swing using 14 physical screens designed by TPI to evaluate all parts of a player’s body and identify limitations that can cause performance issues or pain.  The screen itself takes less than 7 minutes to perform but allows Dr. Cervone to identify the specific areas of movement or stability that need treatment.  He wants to be as detailed and specific as possible when treating a player’s problems.  “If you don’t test, it is just a guess!”

What Happens After The Physical Screen Is Done?

After the results of the screen are recorded, Dr. Cervone will establish the player’s individual Body-Swing Connection, or simply, how the problems found during the screens are affecting the player’s golf game or how those problems are related to the player’s pain.  He will then discuss with the player the individually tailored treatment and exercise plan to correct the problems identified and give recommendations if another golf professional may need to be consulted to assist with corrections. (ie short game specialists, personal trainers, etc.)  As treatment continues, the screens will be retested and the player will notice how their failed screens are improving!  This improvement correlates with an improved golf game and decreased pain.

Can The TPI Evaluation Help More Than Just Golfers?

ABSOLUTELY!  The physical screens, while designed for golfers, can help identify problems in ANY other kind of athlete or non-athlete.  If you are struggling with any sort of pain or movement problem, call Cumberland Chiropractic and Sports Medicine clinic in Lebanon, TN.
